WORKSHOPS FOR CLASSROOMS, CONFERENCES, AND RETREATS
Body of Writing
Body of Writing adds an additional dimension to the traditional body, mind, spirit practice of yoga: story. This workshop offers a variety of inspirational writing exercises and simple yoga postures, as well as meditation and visualization techniques designed to help workshop participants access the stories they carry around with them every day, often unknowingly.
Participants will learn calming breathing techniques that allow them to move deeper into the process of unearthing their individual stories. The artistic aspect of each person will be challenged and nurtured so that everyone leaves the workshop feeling stimulated yet relaxed. Workshop participants will depart with new goals for their writing lives or the start of a new piece. No previous experience with yoga is necessary.
This workshop is for musicians and non-musicians alike. All participants will be encouraged and supported as we focus on lyrics, melody, chord progression, and mood. We’ll listen to songs, analyze structure, and use literary devices to create original lyrics. We’ll use our voices to facilitate the process. Participants work individually and as part of a group. Prior musical experience is not necessary.
Let’s Get This Story Started!
This workshop begins with a brainstorm to discover topics that are important to the group. We’ll choose one to be the seed of our story. Using guided writing exercises, we’ll create character sketches, then share them. Next, we’ll vote to decide which character will be our main character. As our MC takes on a life of his/her (its!) own, we’ll use a little critical thinking to discover what they want, how they might try to get it, and what stands in their way. In addition, participants will be encouraged to start a second, individual story that they can continue working on at home.
Undercover: Is There a Song in Your Book?
Would your story benefit from having a musical companion piece? If so, this workshop is for you. Participants will be guided to discover what kind of song might work best with their Novel, Chapter Book, Picture Book, or Poem, and how to get started with the songwriting process, as well learn what steps to take once their song is complete.
If you have a song already in progress, bring it! If you play an instrument, bring that. However, no experience with songwriting is necessary for this workshop. Participants simply must be ready to make some noise!
The workshop Undercover: Is There a Song in Your Book? first presented with the following keynote, which also works well as a standalone presentation.
